[Daniel moves – and it’s quick the uncanny speed that Koby’s seen once or twice in Louis, a reflex quicker than the eye, not there and then, suddenly close, lighting up those instinctive, prey-animal parts of his mind that abruptly scream danger, danger, danger with a siren-like ferocity. He hadn’t survived as long as he had by taking undue risks – when there’s a storm, he hides, when there’s a fight, he hides, when something approaches that stirs his animal hindbrain into riotous frenzy, he hides.

But there’s nowhere to hide, now, even though Koby instinctively recoils back against the thick hedge of the maze, branches jabbing into his spine, breath hitching in his chest. And, even if there were, even if he could somehow outrun and evade Daniel, would he? Would he categorize his – mentor, teacher, the first person to reach out and give him an anchor in this disorienting, overwhelming place – as nothing more than a threat to escape?

No. He wouldn’t. He can’t, even though his mind clicks through potential escape routes with the speed of fingers flying over a keyboard, of a pen scribbling notes deep, deep into the night. Because it’s Daniel and because if Koby slips away, there’s no guarantee that the next person will, especially if –
