For monks, we do not partake, it is true... though we are few in comparison to the wide world. Serving God is important, but so is enjoying the wonders He's supplied us. We just choose what those wonders are for ourselves carefully.
[So, it's complicated. Diarmuid has never really thought all that hard about the people outside of the monastery. What did they partake in? What sins did they commit often? How often did they pray, or praise God, or hate Him and His ways? He is not sure, much like he's sure it would not stop him from liking them for their uniqueness, bestowed on them by the beauty of creation. He's not sure if it's the right way for him to think... but there are brothers who believe that animals have no souls, and maybe it is so, but he cannot look at a horse and see a soulless thing looking back.]
To have to remember so much. And so young... Your soul must feel so heavy.
