[ it's too quick a movement to resist, her feet unsteady on the ground one moment and then aloft, the next, a dainty shoe clattering to the floor. air rushes against her ears, the sounds of pleasure and terror gone in an instant. she clings on instinct, eyes shuttered and head bent into louis' chest until everything stills around them. oh. not even her knights have ever lifted her so swiftly from danger, when alicent's voice is always the first to rise above the din — to direct her guard to protect her children or sheath their swords.

for a few uneven breaths, she mirrors his shock. it is the second time in saltburnt that someone has deemed her worth protecting. ]


Hush. [ over-familiar, perhaps, the way she might soothe her brother or children. alicent has always thought quicker than most: she knew it on driftmark, when she managed to raise a blade against a princess. with effort, she forces herself to do so now, one hand flitting from louis' neck to his jaw, tipping it to regard her. ]
