[ Well now this is the only thing he wants! >:( ]

I've experienced consciousnesses bigger than myself. [ Whew, close call on "consciousnesses" after the number of shots he's done. Please clap. ] I know this is like, famously what mortals say before being reduced to piles of ash, but ...

It doesn't stay. The feeling. So it's not as if I'd be, like, back in my body and trying to contain all of you. The part that stays after is just ... a sliver, or like one of those dreams where you remember what you dreamed about but not the whole thing.

[ He's watching, he's listening. As always, he's smiling, too. Matt makes it so easy.

And after that explanation, he calmly continues with: ]

What's the most painful death you can think of.

[ Matt's expression shifts: a brief flicker of surprise arches his eyebrows. Then the color and animation starts to drain from his face, his expression closing off. ]

The one I've already had.

So you'd experience something beyond that. Just to show me what I can't have.

[ Is this a small test now? Maybe. ]

[ Matt still looks a little wan, a bit stony. For a moment, he breathes, thinking of the letters S-N-I-T-C-H carving themselves into his skin.

Then he nods. ]

Yes.

[ There's silence between them, something different in Zephir's eyes. It could be the color. It could be a new understanding of the man standing before him, shutting down and opening himself up at the same time. ]

Because you're mine.

[ Not a question. An instruction. ]

[semicharmed]

[ Now Matt smiles, faint but genuine.

Because I'm me, he could counter. But as he meets Zephir's gaze, he's not sure there's a meaningful difference between the two.

He murmurs, ] Because I'm yours.

Thank you, Matt. For saying that.

[ Gradually, Zephir brings a finger up to his mouth, piercing the pad with one canine. He lets it bleed a drop or two into Matt's glass, the same white substance he once drank off his neck to feel a brand new flavor of euphoria. ]

Find someone to share it with. Think of me when you do.

Of course.

[ Though it feels strange to be thanked for something that strikes Matt as so architectural. A truth like natural law. Not saying the words out loud wouldn't make them any less true.

Matt watches the droplets fall, luminous as moonstones, then mingle with the liquor in the glass. He glances back to Zephir's face, his smile warming. ]

I will. Thank you.
