Are there aliens? Did you meet the aliens? How do I meet the aliens?

I've never met an alien.

[temporicide]

But what about the first one? I know you're toying with me. But I have to know!

[achilles]

How about this. Do you think aliens exist?

[temporicide]

Well, I guess I haven't been very subtle. But I think so. I worry about their well-being.

[achilles]

If they're real enough to worry about their well being, then they're real, don't you think?

I wouldn't let any living thing get needlessly hurt under my watch. Does that help?

[temporicide]

That's a little bit of a witchy way to put that, by the way.

( looking genuinely sheepish, ) Is it? I just mean.




Well, you know I can't tell you about secret government operations. But I'd like to give comfort where I can.

[temporicide]

Well, I am witchy, so I think it's good. But I always think of things like invocations. I think feelings have weight. I feel like there are beings from another planet on earth, and that raises the chances there are, were. Will be.

But you are being kind to me, I know. I'm not your first conspiracy theorist, I bet.

[achilles]

You feel it?

No, definitely not. But you're being kind, too. Some other conspiracy theorists are far less pleasant to talk to.

[temporicide]

I feel everything all the time. People, places, animals, plants. Even words. It makes noise in my head, you know? Like an orchestra in the background, playing all together all at once, at least when it works right.

What do you do with those ones?

[achilles]

Is it painful? Or — overwhelming?

I try to act kindly towards anyone who comes to me. But there's a lot of schmoozing in politics — I've had to learn the art of a threat good enough that no one notices its violence.

[temporicide]

The second one, sometimes. I do things to make the world small again, so I can focus. Like dancing! That's a good one.

So they get scared, but they can't say why. That's a kind of superpower, I think.

[achilles]

Dancing, really? You know, that suits you. I'd offer to take you out sometime, but you should know, my dancing skills are laughably bad. Just ask Embry.

You're giving me too much credit there, but thank you, all the same.

[temporicide]

I bet you're being self-deprecating, and I happen to have been a [ wildly underpaid part-time assistant ] teacher of dance. But I have to know. Did you step on his feet?

Well, I sure can't do it. I'm more of a sledgehammer.

[achilles]

Oh, yes. Stepped, stomped. You name it. I have no rhythm, and I'm terrible at memorizing the steps. Still, I have good memories of when he taught me.

If you asked me, I'd say there isn't anything "sledgehammer" about you, Roza. You're very graceful. Or ... fluid. Like a poem.

When was it? Your lesson.

And, well, [ flustering only slightly, she'd swear, ] well, thank you. I try to be that way, I think. To yield to current and rhythm. Oh, you know, like that Bruce Lee quote about water!

Over ten years ago, while we were in R&R in Prague. The Viennese waltz, if you were curious — to a rendition of Seal's "Kiss from a Rose." It's a good memory.

( cute,,,, ) Ah. "When you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup." You don't think that's you?

That's a good song to make a memory to. The best songs are the ones that make things feel like a movie in real life, I think, like... for a second everything is just as it should have been written. I have lists of these.
