I will say, I was fifteen, heartbroken and suffering blood loss when I made the deal.

I probably would have made that kind of deal too, at fifteen. And it's a young age to have your heart broken. The muscle isn't ready.

What did people tell you your purpose was?

To marry well enough to secure my family's place in society. My parents were social climber and I, the youngest of five, was set to marry a Duke.

You have to be fifteen and very dumb.

We made a pact between ourselves. She claimed ownership of my virginity and taught me magic in exchange.

So you were promised to her?

No. It was more a guardianship rather than...she wouldn't have-- it wasn't like that.

I had been making bad decisions. My family wanted to force me into marriage. It was the most valuable thing I had to bargain with.

She would pick for me, when the time came, or approve it. We never really solidified that part of it.

So... how did it work out, in the end?

Our pact was broken.

In Rubilyk, she wasn't able to reach me and our connection was severed. That mean our pact no longer stood.

And I ended up having to make the decision sooner rather than later.

Right. Uh. A game. Where you have to mark off numbers that are called. And to win, you get them all in a row. Or, all four corners, or in a "blackout," all the spaces. Usually that's the last round. Really big with the older crowd, church ladies, town halls, some casinos.
