The senator. The red scare, in the 50s? He’s infamous even now, if the history books are to be believed.

That's when everyone was hiding under their desks because they thought Russia was going to bomb us, right? I guess I should have paid more attention in history class.

[holyposition]

I was out of high school by the time the Soviet threat began, but yeah. It always feels weird calling it history, though.

It's totally weird, right? I wonder if people learn about the 90s in books now.

Well, did you like the job?

[holyposition]

Yeah, they do. It's not so far in the rear view for scholarly consensus, though.

I did. For a while. I thought I was doing something important, but he turned out to be a corrupt liar.

Happens to the best of us. That sucks, though. Did you quit?

[holyposition]

I quit and joined the army. But I got here right before I left for basic training.

Can I ask you a question?

Did you quit?

[holyposition]

Yeah, I quit. A few days before I came here.

Did it feel good to do it? I've quit a lot of jobs, but they were a different kind.

[holyposition]

No. It felt terrible. But I didn't have a choice.

I'm sorry. Losing your choice is a terrible thing. Like a kind of prison.

It was for the best, I know that now. But it was hard. A disillusionment, I guess.

[temporicide]

It changed your path from what you thought it would be, right?

In some places, rivers change direction sometimes, because they have to. It hurts the earth at first, 'cause the environment's shifting, but it's not forever. I hope it's like a river-change for you, so the hurt goes away, and your new path turns out to be the better one.

He put his hands on me when I brought up the doctored photos to him. But not like that.

I thought it was the right thing at the time. It was too easy to compromise myself for the greater good.

Especially, when you believe he has the greater good in mind. Which, we now know he didn't.

It wasn't easy for you and Hawk, in the time you lived.

[holyposition]

I really did believe that. I was so devoted to it. But I'd never even envisioned a world where it was safe to be who I was, so the witch hunts against homosexuals were scary, but not shocking. Of course it would come to this. You know? I was already hiding, I just had to make sure I was really, really good at it.

And you came from that to werewolf. And everything else this house throws at you.

Hawk is very cavalier about vampires and the supernatural.

Well, I had a few months before getting into that. But what I learned there...spying and sneaking around. It helped.

Hawk's always been hard to scandalize. I've had a hard time with it in the past. But it gets harder and harder to be shocked by the supernatural when you've spent the last fourteen months here.
